Breeding
How Pal Breeding Works: Combi Rank, Eggs, and the Breeding Table
Every Pal has a hidden Combi Rank, and figuring out what it actually predicts took me down a rabbit hole deep enough to need its own egg incubator — turns out the popular shorthand explanation for breeding is, at best, an educated guess dressed up as a rule.
What Combi Rank Actually Is
Unlike most stats, lower is stronger here — Jetragon sits at rank 90 while a starter like Lamball sits well over 1000. The common shorthand explanation says the game averages two parents' ranks and hatches whichever Pal's own rank is closest to that average. That's only an approximation of the real logic, though: tested against a complete datamined parent-to-child table, that closest-rank approach got the wrong answer for roughly 1 in 6 pairings. Rank clustering, ties, and a long list of special-cased pairs all break the simple formula in ways that aren't fully documented anywhere public.
Why We Ditched the Formula Entirely
Because of that, this site's Breeding Calculator no longer tries to recompute a result from Combi Rank at all. It looks up every pairing directly in a complete parent-to-child table datamined from the game's own data files, covering every possible combination between the Pals in this database. There's no approximation step left to get wrong — the same table the calculator uses is generated straight from the game's internal breeding data.
Same-Species and Gender Exceptions
Breeding two of the same species always produces that species, even for Pals that can never be produced from a cross-species pairing (like Jetragon). Those Pals are only otherwise obtainable by finding a wild egg or by capture. One pairing in the live game, Katress x Wixen, produces a different child depending on which parent is male versus female — every other pairing is gender-independent. The calculator flags this specific case when it comes up, so you're not left wondering why the math looks like it broke.
Egg Incubation Times
Egg type determines incubation behavior in three size tiers: Normal-tier eggs (like a Common Egg) hatch in roughly 6 hours at neutral Egg Incubator comfort, Large-tier eggs in roughly 36 hours, and Huge-tier eggs in roughly 72 hours — actual time scales with world/difficulty settings and incubator temperature. Patience is still, annoyingly, a core game mechanic.
Already know which Pal you want? Use the reverse lookup tool on the Breeding Calculator page and work backward to a valid parent pair — it's faster than guessing combinations by hand, and considerably less humbling.
